Pump Brand Ideas was born in 1999.

At the time, a flurry of smaller agencies were opening their doors, but we can’t think of even one that has stayed the course. Our vision at the time was to provide businesses and brands with the kind of thinking and quality of work mostly associated with big, global agencies, but with the agility, versatility and cheeky start-up attitude of a small agency.

This remains our positioning and is central to the way we work. As our track record shows, it’s an approach that’s served us (and more importantly, our clients) well.

Small agency. Big heart.

We’ve been resolutely intentional about remaining small and independent. We get a great deal of joy from knowing we’re in charge of our own destiny and we find it gives us immense freedom. Although our core team is lean, we’ve worked hard and looked wide to build a diverse network of friends and allies; talent and skill we know and trust. And vice versa.

This means our capacity is limitless, allowing us to flex our creative muscle in virtually any discipline and to deliver all the things we promise.

The value of experience.

Pump is owned and managed by three industry stalwarts - the original Pump attendants - who between them have 60+ years of experience in strategy, marketing, brand building, business leadership and creativity. The three (Andy Dippenaar, Aviva Marock and Gary McBirnie) are at the coal face everyday with their sleeves rolled up and hands dirty. So there’s no palming off to junior staff; you have heavyweight expertise and involvement from start to finish. Consistency is as important in business as it is in building valuable brands.

Great workspace. Better headspace.

Today, we’re an independent, Level 4 BBBEE creative practice and, although we’re a remote-working collective, we have permanent workspace in the north of South Africa’s capital, Johannesburg. Fully equipped with meeting rooms, boardroom and 60-seater auditorium, it’s a cool space to meet, talk about ideas or simply imagine how we can change the world for better (over a pretty decent coffee). Give us a buzz and let’s make a plan to meet.

Our story.
